Peranakan Museum

I visited the newly opened Peranakan Museum on Sunday. My friend is a volunteer guide of the Peranakan Museum so she invited me as a guest and I need not pay for the entrance fees.

The museum is really interesting. There are lots of displays with regards to the Peranakans. Be it the Peranakans' culture, daily lives and their beliefs. It was amazing to be able to see such historical stuff in this museum.

I enjoyed the visit and will definitely go there again, probably with my foreign friends.

In fact, I am considered as a Peranakan, but not a pure Peranakan. My grandmother (dad's mom) was a Peranakan. My dad was born in Malacca, which is one of the places where the Peranakans originated from. I had been asked before if I was a Malay and people told me that I don't look have normal Chinese looks. Because of being a Peranakan 後代, I am really interested in Peranakans culture etc since many years back. Probably that is why I like Malacca so much, even though I have heard people saying that it is a boring place.

If my grandmother had not died when my dad is young, probably I would be able to know more about the Peranakans culture from her. It is quite sad that this Peranakans knowlege was lost and did not come to me. I just have to read up and know more about the Peranakans background on my own.

I feel quite proud to be a Peranakan 後代 as Peranakan has a history of our own.
